The Abbotskerswell Women’s Softball team played their first friendly of the season away at Ivybridge, with a well cut outfield and the sun shining – and thankfully a lot less wind than at the weekend.
Emma Rogers first outing as skipper started well with winning the toss and choosing to bat first.
The first pair of Lisa ‘Slugger’ Mortlock and Hillary ‘Jonty Rhodes’ Mottershead got the women off to a flyer, despite some good bowling from the Ivybridge pair, having Abbots 40 for no wickets lost after their 4 overs.
The second pair of debutant Amy Higgins and Alison Milner came up against some very difficult bowling but still managed to move the score on to 65 – 0 after their stint at the crease.
Anna Collin and Becky Mortlock found the bowling very tight and accurate and were dismissed 3 times whilst still managing to move the score on to 76 – 3 wickets lost after 12 overs.
The final pair of Emma and Meg Garner made the most of their 4 overs with an excellent stand of 23 for no wickets lost in their 4 overs.
This left Abbots with a 16 over total of 109 – 3; defendable as long as they kept the bowling accurate and tight and picked up a few wickets along the way.
With Lisa Mortlock opting to specialise as wicket-keeper, that left the bowling attack up to the skipper to juggle around.
Ivybridge started the chase on 15 thanks to their having taken 3 wickets.
Anna, Emma, Becky and Meg restricted the 1st pair to 17 runs for 1 wicket in their 4 overs, which was a cracking start to the defence of the new target of 114 runs (5 wickets added to the bowling teams total for each wicket taken) 32 – 1
Alison, Amy, Hillary and Anna (2nd over) managed to battle hard to keep the runs down, but the batters were getting used to conditions and striking the ball much better and the 2nd Ivybridge pair moved the total on to 62 – 2 after their 4 overs, with Hillary taking a much deserved wicket. The new target was 119.
The third Ivybridge pair came out swinging and a Emma, Becky, Meg and Amy did well to keep the score down to 102 – 2 after this 4 over stint. The game was going to be close!
Ivybridge needed 18 to win, provided they didn’t lose any more wickets off the next 4 overs.
Hillary bowled the first over and the batters managed just one run and a wide… 15 to win.
Amy bowled the next over and broke the game wide open with a magnificent double-wicket maiden… the target moved up to 129 thanks to that amazing effort, and the game was nearly won.
Becky bowled the 15th over and another magnificent effort meant the batters only scored 1 run and a wide 108 – 4
This meant that Amy’s final over needed to go for less than 22 for an Abbots win…
Amy finished an excellent spell conceding just 5 runs in the final over, leaving Ivybridge 16 runs short on 113 – 4 against Abbots 129 – 3. She returned figures of 4-1-23-2 on debut and was voted Player of the Match by the Ivybridge Women.
We’d like to express our thanks to Ivybridge CC and the Ivybridge Women for being excellent hosts and extending their hospitality and facilities to us to allow us to get the game on. The game was played, as always in an excellent spirit. Thank you. We look forward to the return fixture in August.
