On a sunny, but blustery Monday night, The Abbotskerswell Women’s softball team made their debut in the Devon Cricket Women’s softball League against Paignton Ladies.
The Two Mile Oak ground looked splendid, thanks to the ever-present and hard working Sarge and Mitch.
Emma Rogers lost the toss (fined accordingly) and we were asked to bat, with Lisa Mortlock and and Hillary Mottershead opening the innings for Abbots.
They got Abbots off to a flyer, hitting 18 and 8 respectively leaving Abbots 36 – 0 at the end of their 4-overs. Plenty of good striking and good running and zero wickets lost was a great start.
Next pair up were the skipper, Emma, with Becky Mortlock. The opposition bowlers put in a very good performance and managed to limit Emma and Becky to a 18 run stand, and managed to take one wicket too. This left Abbots on 54-1 at the half-way point. A good shift from the opening 2 pairs.
Next came the pair of Anna Collin and Katherine Joyner, but again, the bowlers were very accurate and bowled a lot of difficult to get away deliveries. Anna and Katherine managed to put on 18 runs, but were unable to prevent the bowlers taking 3 more wickets, which was a slight setback. Abbots on 72-4 with 4 overs to go.
The final pairing of Amy Higgins and Tamsin sleep made great strides hitting an impressive 22 in their overs for zero wickets conceded leaving Abbots Women with a batting total of 94 for 4 at the end of their batting innings.
Paignton went in to their innings with a 20 run start, thanks to their 4 wickets taken.
Paignton’s first pair managed 27 runs of their 4 overs, with L Wyman scoring 16 individually. Katherine Joyner and Becky Mortlock bowled tidy overs going or just 3 runs in each.
The second Paignton pair were restricted to just 18 runs thanks to excellent bowling, with both Tamsin Sleep and Amy Higgins taking a wicket each. Those 2 wickets meant that the target for Paignton increased from 94 to 104 from their 16 overs. Paignton 65-2 at half-way, chasing 104.
The third Paignton Pair battled hard against a determined Abbots bowling attack and managed to add a further 22 runs, but lost another wicket, bowled by the skipper Emma. Paignton on 87-2 chasing 109. The game was going to be a tight finish!
As it transpired, the last Paignton pair contained two excellent batters, who managed to steer the Paignton women home, despite some excellent bowling from the Abbots women. They managed to put on 31 in the last 4-overs, losing zero wickets leaving Paignton with a final total of 118-3 against Abbotskerswell Women’s final total of 109-3 – a victory for Paignton Ladies softball team by 9 runs.
An excellent first league game by Abbotskerswell Women’s Softball team, narrowly losing to a very good Paignton side.
Next match for the Women’s softball team is the home game versus their ‘frenemies’ from Ottery St Mary on Monday 17th May, followed by the next League game versus Paignton Ladies at Queens Park on Monday 24th May
